信陽東站是京廣高鐵的重要組成部分，是國家規劃的“四縱四橫”鐵路快速客運網的主骨架之一；也是規劃合康高鐵、寧西高鐵、信襄高鐵的必經之地。河南段546公里，信陽東站按三站臺七道設計，預留合肥至襄陽鐵路增建二線客運連接線。對方便旅客出行，繁榮沿線經濟，加快河南經濟社會發展具有重大意義。
